London's Metropolitan Police have bought uniforms featured in 'The Bill' to make sure they are not used by criminals pretending to be working for the police force.
ITV's long-running police drama 'The Bill', which was axed after 27 years, aired for the last time in August. The show was allowed to use real police equipment, meaning genuine uniforms featured in the series could have fallen into the wrong hands after 'The Bill' ended.
A Met Police spokesperson said: "When the announcement was made that 'The Bill' was to cease production, the Metropolitan Police approached the production company with a view to acquiring all used and unused items of clothing and uniform.
"The purpose of this approach was to ensure that Metropolitan Police uniforms did not enter the public domain and give rise to the potential use by unauthorised persons in the commission of criminal activities."
It is unclear how much the Metropolitan Police have spent on acquiring costumes from 'The Bill', but the London force are said to have bought 400 kg of 'Bill' items, including police caps, trousers, jackets and body armour. The gear is to be used by real police officers.
